Oh I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm I get high with a little help from my friends
Oh I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends
– John Lennon and Paul McCartney
As Mr. Lennon and Mr. McCartney wrote in 1967… “Oh I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends.”, we are also going to sing the praises of working to support “our friends”.
Many small business owners and soloprneuers go-it-alone in the world of business. Early on going-it-alone is exciting and thrilling. Somewhere along the way, though, something changes. We find out it is lonely at the top. If we start talking shop with friends or our significant other we very soon start getting blank stares. It isn’t their fault they do not know what we are talking about, everyday people just have no idea about what happens in the world of running a business. It is hard to guess what it is like unless you’ve been there.
When your friends and significant other can no longer assist you on your business journey, where do you turn for help?
Over the years, I have joined the local chambers to connect with like-minded people. I have joined industry groups. Both were helpful to some degree, but it was rare that I got a really deep relationship with people I didn’t see consistently. We talked about surface level topics but never got too deep.
Over the years, I’ve also been in a few mastermind and accountability groups. I’ve been a member of probably 6 to 12 different groups in the mastermind capacity. Some were related to a specific training or topic, others were more general. Some were free others were up to $1000 per month. No matter the group, even the ones that were less productive, a group like this always helped me get more done then I would have gotten done on my own. This is where the song comes back in… “I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends“. Yes, and these groups are fun. To add a little more fun here is the Beatles song I keep referencing. Enjoy!
Now let’s get back to work! Data shows that people who write down their goals are more likely to achieve their goals. To take this one step further, the data also shows that people who share their goals with other people, boost their success even higher. This is why joining a mastermind group can be so beneficial.
If you are a business owner and it feels lonely at the top or you feel stuck, maybe a mastermind group could help round out the support and comradery you need, to push your business to the next level. A mastermind group is just two or more people meeting consistently to work on their businesses (or a specific project).
Wikipedia offers this to describe Mastermind Groups…
A mastermind group is a peer-to-peer mentoring concept used to help members solve their problems with input and advice from the other group members. The concept was coined in 1925 by author Napoleon Hill in his book The Law of Success and described in more detail in his 1937 book, Think and Grow Rich. In his books, Hill discussed the idea of the Master Mind, which referred to two or more people coming together in harmony to solve problems.
Cooperation through the use of mastermind groups was one of the laws of success that Hill learned studying successful Americans including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Theodore Roosevelt, John D. Rockefeller, and Charles Schwab.
Here is a great video on what a mastermind group is all about. Enjoy!
Anyone who’s studied business at all has probably heard of Napoleon Hill and his book Think and Grow Rich. You’ve probably also heard the list of great business people like Henry Ford, who actually used mastermind groups. The question must be asked… are masterminds still as beneficial in the “Google world”, as they were in the 1920’s? My answer would be yes, and here’s why. Although Google can answer any question you have, Google cannot answer the questions you don’t ask. What I mean is… sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know. If we don’t know about something, we cannot ask Google. These are our blind spots in business. This is where a good mastermind group could come in. A good mastermind has a diverse group of people with diverse backgrounds. You might be amazed at the value someone outside your industry can bring to the way you think about business.
Let me share how these blindspots happen and why I think a mastermind is a great solution to overcome business blindspots. This is one of my personal videos from my business, Brandwise. I hope this helps clarify why going it alone and using google to solve your problems is not always an effective strategy.
The difference between joining networking groups and industry related groups is a mastermind is a safe space where you can get vulnerable and talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of your business.
You can open up and ask for help and the group is built by design to support this. You can talk about your struggles and talk about your wins and share. You can get help, but you can also GIVE help to others. If you are looking for a way to accelerate your growth, then finding a good mastermind might be the solution you’ve been looking for. As I mentioned in the video above a group like this can help you figure out what you don’t know you don’t know and get busy to start working on those things.
The Business Success Movement is all about helping business owners find more success in their business and in their lives. This online publication (blog) is one way we help business owners get new ideas and continually challenge their thoughts on business, So if you have not yet subscribed to the blog, please do so now. I gotta be honest though this content and any online content or books for that matter are very onesided. This site is a way for us to share content and although you’ll get good ideas, you may not get real growth happening very quickly by only reading articles on this blog.
You might find that the Business Success Movement Facebook group helps you take these ideas to another level and allows you to connect with other business owners discussing these topics. The problem with the Facebook group is there are too many people to really build a close relationship with quickly and in this platform, people are still a bit guarded since the tight relationships are not established yet. The other issue is although it IS a safe space to share ideas, it is not a small tight group where everyone trusts everyone.
This is why we are adding mastermind groups to the mix. You see the blog shares new content, the Facebook group offers an intro to a free community, but the new mastermind is boosting the community aspect of the Movement and going to offer hands-on personal inspiration, motivation, accountability, and support.
The Business Success Movement’s purpose is to leave the business community better than we found it and the only way we can do this is by offering ways to push accountability and growth to business owners. You see to move the needle on business success, we have to start small and get personal. Making personal connections and building trust takes time and we will be able to do this in weekly meetings with 10 or so business owners talking shop and consistently WORKING ON their businesses.
If you are a business owner looking to take things to the next level you might want to check out this great opportunity.
